Ambassador of Delft, something for you?

Hugo de Groot , born in Delft , created the foundation for international law early in the 17th century with his ' De iure belli ac pacis ' . Not much later Antoni van Leeuwenhoek stood at the credle of the modern imaging techniques with his handcrafted microscopes. This while his friend Reinier de Graaf was conducting pioneering research in the field of reproductive medicine.

Delft still belongs to the top of the scientific world with its distinctive technical know-how . It is not without reason that so many and diverse scientific institutes can be found in our city next to the Technical University: TNO, IHE Unesco, Deltares to name a few.

Are you also proud of our international reputation? Our ambassador network Legatus Delft is looking for new ambassadors to help Delft prosper even more as international city of science, high-tech and innovation. Below you can read what you can do for the city and what Legatus Delft can do for you.

Legatus Delft

In 2017, the Delft Convention Bureau of Delft Marketing established the ambassador network Legatus Delft. Meanwhile Legatus Delft has over 70 members and the network is personally supported by our mayor Marja van Bijsterveldt and rector Tim van der Hagen. The main goal of Legatus Delft is to profile our city as a scientific city and conference city.

The attractive scientific and cultural environment in combination with the central location, easy accessibility, great accommodations, and the unique city centre make Delft an attractive destination for conferences. The city of Delft would like to accommodate these conferences. Conferences strengthen the image of the city as high-tech and knowledge city, they lead to further development of the intellectual capital of the city and, finally, conferences strengthen the local economy.

How can you contribute as ambassador?

To expand the network, we are actively contacting scientists, entrepreneurs and key figures from Delft who regularly participate in international forums. As an ambassador you promote Delft as a scientific city and conference city in these forums – in the way that suits you.

With this ambassador’s network we follow other major university cities like Leiden and Cambridge who have been successful with their ambassador programs. In Cambridge it turned out that 75% of all conferences take place in the city thanks to the influence of local key figures. They know the field and the city, promote it internationally and are often involved in the start of successful conferences and meetings. Since our foundation in 2017, several dozen meetings and conferences have been organized in Delft that started in the network. By expanding the network, we want to increase this success!

What does the network mean to you?

Legatus Delft offers a network with opportunities for cross-pollination within the ' triple helix’. During annual meetings of a cultural and/or scientific nature you have the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences with other members and create valuable networking opportunities and collaborations. We tailor the program of the meetings to the wishes of our members.

We also support our ambassador members in writing bids and offer advice and support in organizing a conference or meeting. For you, a conference is simply an effective means of exchanging knowledge and experiences, making subjects open for discussion, meeting colleagues or even starting financing opportunities. And you can showcase your department, faculty, or your work internationally.
